Boko Haram: FG Brags We Are In Control

ABUJA— Barely a week after President Goodluck Jonathan revealed plans to destabilise his administration through terrorist plots, the Federal Government, yesterday, re-assured Nigerians and foreigners living in the country that it was on top of the situation.

According to the government, approach towards solving the menace has been to apply physical security only as a catalyst for honest dialogue among genuine stakeholders and key players.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2011 Defence Advisers and Attachés’ Conference in Abuja, Defence Minister, Dr. Bello Mohammed, who was represented by the Minister of State for Defence, Erelu Olusola Obada, explained that the various efforts of government at finding a lasting solution to the increased attacks on innocent citizens and security agents by Boko Haram was a clear indication of government’s commitment to lasting peace and security in the country required for national peace and progress.

Mohammed said: “The current security situation in Nigeria demands that all hands must be on deck to jointly put a stop to the increased activities of miscreants bent on destabilising the country.

“This also means that the various security agencies in the country have more roles to play.” There is, therefore, the need for cooperation, collaboration and synergy of efforts among all security outfits if we are to preserve our peace and create an atmosphere that will attract foreign investments to Nigeria.”

Explaining that national security in the Nigerian context included containment of instability, control of crimes, elimination of corruption, safeguarding of the nations’ territory, the citizens and their properties from both external and internal threats, the minister said: “Our government believes in an efficient information and intelligence that are capable of predicting threats to our collective security.

“The passage of the bill stipulating measures to combat terrorism by the lawmakers in our country no doubt will further ensure that perpetrators of evil in the society have no place to hide.

“Accordingly, the Federal Government will do all that is required to continue to have an efficient, reliable and proactive intelligence gathering system.”
